J’ai le plaisir de vous informer que l'Organisation Islamique pour l'Education, les Sciences et la Culture -ISESCO- et le Centre Régional Africain des Sciences et Technologies de l’Espace (CRASTE-LF) avec son projet européen FP7 ‘GEONetCaB’, organisent un atelier régional sur la thématique «Partage et Diffusion de l’Information Géo-spatiale par Réseau en Afrique» Yaoundé, République du Cameroun, du 23 au 26 Juillet 2012
Cet atelier s’adresse aux experts et utilisateurs africains spécialistes dans le domaine de l’Observation de la Terre OT (télédétection et SIG). Il vise le renforcement des capacités scientifiques en OT et ses applications dans la gestion des ressources naturelles, ainsi que le développement durable dans le contexte actuel des changements climatiques.
L’objectif de l’atelier est d’harmonisation des techniques de collecte et de traitement des données, et le développement des expériences régionales en matière des outils spatiaux liés à l’environnement. Mais aussi, et surtout, de faciliter les échanges entre les experts des pays africains d'expression française (développement de pages web spécialisées, réseaux sociaux spécialisés, linkage, partage de données etc..).
Cet atelier va s’étaler sur 4 jours :
Premier jour (23/07/2012): est consacré à un séminaire scientifique, dans lequel les experts présenteront leur projet de recherche; il sera suivi par un débat général sur l’état de l’OT dans les pays d’Afrique à expression française et les perspectives d’avenir.
Les 3 autres jours (24-26/07/2012) : seront consacrés à un atelier pratique de formation sur les dernières techniques de traitement d’images (classification oriéntée-objet pour les images de THRS, traitements d’images hyperspectrales et classifications sub-pixels), mais aussi des ateliers de perfectionnement dans les techniques classiques de traitement d’images (techniques d’extraction des indices de distance par rapport à la droite des sols, techniques de mosaïquage des images spatiales, techniques de production d’orthoimages, techniques de fusion multicapteurs d’images, développement de script SML, personnalisation et création d’interface graphique de traitement d’images etc..)
Cette activité de standing international à un coup réel estimé à plus de 2000 dollars américain (frais d’encadrement, de logement et de nourriture) sera prise en charge par l’ISESCO et le CRASTE-LF. Toutefois et vu les conditions budgétaires très limités, les participants devront prendre en charge leur frais de transport jusqu’à Yaoundé.

Anticipation du devenir de la biodiversité et des services écosystémiques & adaptation aux changements globaux en Afrique"

Par le biais de son programme phare « Modélisation et scénarios de la biodiversité », la Fondation pour la recherche sur la biodiversité (FRB) cherche à favoriser les réseaux et les partenariats entre chercheurs et acteurs aux échelles nationales, européennes et internationales. Organisé en partenariat avec différents partenaires (voir ci-dessous), cet atelier vise à soutenir l’émergence de projets de recherche sur les scénarios de la biodiversité en Afrique subsaharienne, issus de partenariats entre chercheurs africains et internationaux ainsi qu’entre chercheurs et acteurs africains impliqués dans la gestion ou l’utilisation de la biodiversité. Ces projets devront permettre de développer des outils opérationnels d’aide à la gestion et à la décision adaptés aux besoins des acteurs africains.

The Young Women Conservation Biologist (YWCB) working group of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) has great pleasure in announcing The Professional African YWCB Award 2013. The YWCB Working Group was established in 2005 by the Africa Section of the SCB, based on an urgent need to fill the gap created by the limited numbers of women professionals in the field of conservation science in Africa. It was further mandated to act as a platform for young African conservation biologists to share experiences (albeit with a major emphasis on women), generating incentives and mentorship opportunities to strengthen conservation biologists in their careers.
The YWCB Award for professional African women is a non-monetary incentive award aimed at recognizing and applauding the contributions of early to mid-career African professional women in conservation.
Thenominees should have demonstrated, during their career so far in Africa:
- Ability to work with others across gender, social class and
ethnicity to achieve concrete conservation outcomes.
The 2013 award will be presented at the 26th International Congress
for Conservation Biology (ICCB 2013) www.conbio.org/2013 in Baltimore,
Maryland, USA to be held from 21st - 25th July 2013, alongside SCB's
Global Distinguished Service Award, LaRoe and Early Career
Conservationist Awards. The SCB and Africa Section are trying to
secure financial support for the recipient to travel from their
workplace to attend the conference, receive the award in person, and
ideally to present a paper on the recognized work.
SCOPE OF AWARD:
The scope of the award is open to any area of conservation science directed towards practical conservation action. A nominator of high professional standing should submit the application on behalf of an
exceptional nominee. This should be supported by at least two letters of recommendation by additional referees. Under unusual circumstances only, if a highly accomplished candidate works in such isolation that
a nominator is not available, the Awards Panel may consider self-nominations. The application should clearly explain the nominee’s role within in the conservation community and evidence of her
professional accomplishments, including her ability to work with diverse interests to achieve balanced and pragmatic solutions to conservation challenges. The Awards Panel will not normally make awards to African women working outside the continent, nor to early career students with no outstanding practical accomplishments.
NOMINATIONS:
Nominations on behalf of potential awardees are invited from the conservation community (e.g., scientists, managers, activists). The nominee must, however, work explicitly in the field of conservation biology, rather than advocacy or education without explicit conservation biology content. Nominations will be peer-reviewed by an
Awards Panel of SCB conservation scientists and managers. To submit a nomination, please download nomination form from

Biofuel production and use in Africa have been linked to numerous environmental and socio-economic impacts such as GHG/atmospheric pollutant emissions, increased water use, water pollution, soil erosion, deforestation, biodiversity loss, income/employment generation, energy security, food security, human health and social conflicts. Whether these impacts are positive or negative depends on a multitude of factors such as the feedstock, the environmental/socio-economic context of biofuel production, and the policy instruments in place during biofuel production, use and trade.
In this report we discuss a wide array of these impacts, as they relate to jatropha biodiesel and sugarcane ethanol in Africa. A major challenge for obtaining a comprehensive picture of biofuel tradeoffs is the fact that the biofuel literature is multidisciplinary and rapidly expanding. This report employs the ecosystem services framework developed during the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA), as a means of synthesizing the available evidence about biofuel impacts and identifying the main trade-offs associated with biofuels in Africa.
Our in depth review of the academic literature found that biofuel landscapes in Africa can provide, displace, divert and degrade a large number of provisioning, regulating and potentially cultural ecosystem services. These ecosystem services can link into human well-being in multiple ways. In most cases there are significant human well-being trade-offs that depend on a number of factors. Some of these trade-offs are inevitable, but in many cases at least part of the negative impact can be mitigated through careful planning.
Despite a wealth of literature there are still significant research gaps at the interface of biofuels, ecosystem services and human well-being in Africa. Our incomplete and piecemeal understanding of the main environmental and socio-economic impacts of biofuel production in Africa combined with the low yields currently obtained (mainly from jatropha projects), are at this point the most important barriers for the development of policies that can ensure the viability and sustainability of future biofuel expansion in the continent. Based on our review findings we offer a number of policy recommendations.

Fondamentalement, les économies africaines d'aujourd'hui sont des économies de croissance. La démographie africaine elle-même est favorable au développement. Il en est de même de tant d'autres indicateurs des changements de fonds en cours sur le continent. Le changement climatique est certes une vulnérabilité mais il est surtout une possibilité pour les africains. Le contexte de crise économique mondiale et de refondation annoncée des économies de demain y est favorable.
C'est sur ce fond problématique que le Réseau Africain de Forêts Modèles (RAFM) invite producteurs, entrepreneurs, chercheurs et décideurs, la société civile et politique, à discuter des changements fondamentaux qui devront déterminer le cours des ajustements africains dans le 30 prochaines années.

INAFORESTA, an international scientific group dedicated to the analysis and improvement of the relationships between cocoa cultivation, trees, people, forests and the environment, announces its forthcoming meeting “Cacao Agroforestry: Sustainability and Environment”.
The INAFORESTA meeting will take place on October 21st and 22nd of 2012, immediately after the 17th International Cocoa Research Conference (ICRC), organized by COPAL (www.copal.org), at the Hilton Hotel, Yaoundé, Cameroon. INAFORESTA scientists will meet in a two-day symposium dedicated to share the latest investigations focused on cacao-based Agroforestry related to (1) climate change, (2) sustainable cocoa supply, (3) the inputs of cocoa Agroforestry in marginal areas and (4) the ecological services provided by cocoa-based Agroforestry systems.

The INAFORESTA meeting will take place on October 21st and 22nd of 2012, immediately after the 17th International Cocoa Research Conference (ICRC), organized by COPAL (www.copal.org), at the Hilton Hotel, Yaoundé, Cameroon.
