Objectif principal
Promouvoir l’agroforesterie, aussi bien dans les cultures vivrières que les cultures de rente, parmi la population agricole de la préfecture de Zio, et appuyer des producteurs désireux de mettre en place de telles pratiques dans leurs champs.
Objectifs spécifiques
-Bibliographie sur les cultures tropicales
-Entretien individuel à partir d’un questionnaire
-Réalisation du guide d’entretien
-Entretien de la pépinière
-Formations sur la conduite d’une parcelle agroforestière aux producteurs volontaires.
-Organisation d’un groupement avec les producteurs.
-Restauration des champs des producteurs par le reboisement à partir d’arbres fertilitaires.
-Accompagnement des producteurs dans la culture des parcelles agroforestières.
Résultats attendus de l’agroforesterie
*Une diffusion plus large des connaissances (théoriques, pratiques, données scientifiques) sur les pratiques agroforestières parmi la population agricole de la préfecture de Zio.
*L’adoption de l’agroforesterie par un groupe de producteur des villages dans la préfecture de Zio.
*La création de pépinière d’arbre fertilitaire dans les villages.
*Une amélioration de la qualité des sols à partir des arbres distribués et une diminution des besoins en engrais chimiques.
Projet 2- «Évaluation de l’impact des pesticides de synthèse dans les zones humides de la préfecture de Zio »
Problématique et objectifs du projet :
Comme dans la plupart des pays en voie de développement, les agriculteurs togolais manquent d’informations pour gérer au mieux leurs cultures et obtenir de bons rendements. Ces lacunes incluent la protection des cultures, qu’elle soit réalisée à l’aide de pesticides de synthèse ou grâce à des méthodes naturelles de lutte contre les ravageurs et maladies des cultures. La mauvaise utilisation des pesticides de synthèse associée à une méconnaissance totale des problèmes de toxicité et de pollution est responsable à l’heure actuelle de problèmes préoccupants de pollution des cours d’eau, nappes phréatiques, … Sans oublier que l’accès à l’eau dans les villages togolais est parfois complexe, poussant de nombreuses familles à utiliser l’eau des rivières pour la consommation, la douche ou encore la lessive.
C’est dans ce cadre-là que s’inscrivent les objectifs du projet :
- Faire l’inventaire des pesticides utilisés dans les zones humides
- Décrire le fonctionnement des zones humides et les systèmes de cultures rencontrés
- Déterminer l’impact des pesticides utilisés
- Déterminer et proposer des systèmes alternatifs, performants et durables de gestion des ravageurs de cultures dans les zones humides.
Projet 3- : « Suppression de la divagation des animaux dans les systèmes d’élevage en milieu rural et urbain »
Le projet de suppression de la divagation des animaux d’élevage a pour but de supprimer les effets négatifs de ce système d’élevage. L’association recherche un ou plusieurs stagiaires pour fournir un accompagnement aux éleveurs. Le travail se fera en collaboration avec les ingénieurs et techniciens agricoles, les membres de l’association et les services étatiques de l’élevage.
Objectifs du stage :
-Sensibilisation de la population et des éleveurs sur les impacts négatifs de la divagation sur les animaux, l’homme et l’environnement
- Regroupement des éleveurs du village pour la recherche de solutions alternatives
-Accompagner les éleveurs dans la construction d’enclos adaptés à leurs besoins
-Effectuer un suivi technique des élevages ayant abandonné la divagation
-Mise en place de campagnes de soins vétérinaires
-Poursuivre la formation des paysans à la conduite d’un système d’élevage clôturé

The successful candidate will conduct research work on statistical analyses of bird distributions in Southern Africa within the project ‘Dynamic macroecology’ funded by the South African National Research Foundation. The aim is to use modern statistical tools (hierarchical occupancy models) and atlas data to quantify recent range changes of South African birds, examine possible causes of these changes, and address questions in macro-ecology.
The project is led by Res Altwegg at the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) in collaboration with Guy Midgley and Phoebe Barnard (SANBI), Les Underhill and Birgit Erni (University of Cape Town) and Jim Nichols (Patuxent Wildlife Research Centre). The postdoc will be based either at the University of Cape Town or SANBI’s Kirstenbosch Research Centre, also in Cape Town. A short visit to Patuxent is envisioned.

The Palmer lab (www.thepalmerlab.com) seeks a post-doctoral research associate for work on the ecology of a multi-species ant-plant mutualism in Kenya, East Africa. Specifically, our lab is investigating how costs and benefits of the protective mutualism between Acacia drepanolobium and its ant associates vary through the ontogeny of both host plants and ant colonies. To do this, we employ field experiments, long-term observations, and modeling. The post-doc will spend up to 6 months of the year in the field in Kenya, and the remainder at the University of Florida, and will assist with the teaching of a field ecology class in Kenya in May.
The ideal candidate will have a strong publication record and references, and experience working independently in remote field sites. A strong interest in the ecology and evolution of mutualism is required, and prior experience is a plus. The appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance.

Engineering (CRECHE) in Durban, South Africa, is looking for Postdoctoral Fellows to work on a large estuarine system, Lake St. Lucia, in the
Isimangaliso Wetland Park, an UNESCO World Heritage Site

The focus of this study is to investigate the wind-driven circulation patterns and mixing within the shallow St Lucia lake basin(s) and their interaction with biological processes. In particular, wind-generated waves cause the re-suspension of fine sediments within the lake, which in turn increases turbidity and impacts on primary production. Submerged macrophytes can dissipate wave energy leading to sediment settling and reductions in turbidity, but their growth depends on turbidity itself.
These and other related biophysical processes will be investigate using a combination of fieldwork and mathematical/numerical modelling methods. Experience in these methods, including the use of MATLAB, or similar modelling software is required.
Appointment as a post-doctoral fellow at UKZN will initially be for 1-year, renewable for a 2nd year subject to satisfactory progress.
